The Next New Thing

Old media and new media have all worked off two of our primary senses: sight and hearing. However, new media has yet to have anything developed that uses our senses of touch, smell, or taste. In the future, I can see something coming up that lets us experience these senses without having to actually leave our homes by transmitting the taste, smell, and texture of the objects directly to our brains.

People could try out new foods to see if they like the flavor, try on new types of perfume and deodorant to figure out if it makes them smell worse than they normally do, or even try on new clothes to make sure it fits and doesn't have any overly itchy tags.

  1. I always watch the Food Network and all the chefs are always saying, "I wish there is smellivision so you can smell this". I think it's a great idea to have a media that allows the viewers to smell what they can see. It'll be pretty awesome.

  2. This would be very cool but how would it be possible? Would we need to implant touch and taste sensors into our body?

  3. That would be incredible. Although you might as well make it virtual reality. That way you can do more than just taste food. Food companies can create their own regions in the virtual worlds where people can taste their food and order the food.

  4. This is quite interesting because my idea was generated the same way, the senses that we're not using. I thought smell should be the next sense that we should be able to use. Check out my post. Great minds think alike!

  5. I imagine it'd work something like virtual reality, but taken to the level of even simulating taste, touch, and smell.

At least we have sight and sound working somewhat. Those special graphics cards and glasses are way too expensive, though.
